Most of them comics. But these days, there’s some stiff competition.

Over a dozen clones now claim to cause the same effect, from genuine strains of herbal viagra to the endless, over-priced scam offers you’ll find in your inbox if your luck’s bad enough.

But among all the medical spam there are a few pills that can help you rise to the deed. And herbal based pills like enzyte can also boost libido, your overall stamina and average energy levels – Or at least, so they claim.

So, does it work? Well, that’s a hard question. Some guys say they do…most wives disagree. Do some research and you can find out the truth…

As both of my regular readers know, I hate ‘reality’ television with a passion that could crush a planet. And the creatively vacant people at Lifetime are about to prove why even that depth of revulsion is barely enough.

On November 11 they will debut a six-part series called, “Blush: The Search for the Next Great Makeup Artist.” Contestants will fight for $100,000, a contract with Max Factor and a shoot for ‘InStyle.’ magazine. Lifetime’s press release says Max Factor’s name and logo will be integrated into “every element of the show, from product use to a branded studio.”

The show is produced by MediaVest, the ad agency for Procter and Gamble…who own Max Factor.

So Lifetime intend to create six obsequious, undiluted infomercials then present them to the audience as a serious contest, without a trace of regard for those viewers’ intelligence. And each one will be stuffed with honest commercials to really drive up the profits.

As with all reality shows, everyone on the set will be non-union. So despite Lifetime’s vast potential profit from this disingenuous insult, not one Actor will get a single day’s work. And this is the kind of programming we’re supposed to get excited about seeing in Hi-Def.

I’m glad it’s the weekend. I think we all need ten-pounds of Hershey’s and at least two days to get over such a shameless assault.

When you’re sixty you’re expected to be a little slow and forgetful. After fifty-nine years of unfettered practice, aided by the cream of this glorious nation’s performing community, the Emmy’s are entitled to no such concession.

Some TV critics are giving this ghastly spectacle overly-kind and upbeat reviews. I would be guilty of fraud and intellectual rape if I even considered it right to concur. The entire, skillfully-coutured charade was 15-minutes of worthwhile viewing squeezed into 3-hours of mind-crushing banality, then smothered in lip gloss and hosed with cheap perfume. All it lacked was a street lamp to lean on.

According to Neilsen, 12.2 million people watched the show – one of its lowest ratings in 15-years. And I couldn’t act surprised if you paid me! Everyone on that stage was there because the Emmys consider them the best of their kind…And that was the best they could do.

If this was their report card, they should deem themselves lucky to get more than an “F”.
~~~
ARTICLEURL
Since arriving in the US she’s launched a clothing line no-one would wear and a perfume no-one could stand, and added her name to the cover of two books which left critics utterly non-plussed by the surprising absence of crayon. Now she wishes to be known as a gourmand.
So let’s see if we’ve got this right; A being who has already proven to a world whose indifference to her very existence is boundless that she can’t sing, dance or act now wants to show beyond any possible hope of recant that she can’t cook.
Is there no beginning to this woman’s talent?
Actually, to be fair, she’ll be joint partners in the eatery with Gordon Ramsey. So as far as I can see, it’s business as usual; Her first ill-advised venture into unwarranted notoriety was achieved with someone else providing the voice. This time, she’s got someone else cooking the food.
Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.
Or should that be, ‘paroled’?
To celebrate this new low-point in her ongoing crusade of setting remarkably low standards for herself then invariably failing to live up to them, the nice folk who run ABC invited her to perform in Times Square, thereby inaugurating Good Morning America’s ‘Fall Concert Series.’
In front of a large, and possibly medicated audience and on live, national television she also performed a track from her 2003 fictional classic, “In This Skin.” After a few bars [which, coincidentally, is the only condition in which one should hear her at all,] she stopped the band and said she couldn’t hear anything. She then counted to three – all by herself – and started again from the beginning.
Let’s be quite clear: The single viable reason why any vocal artist would need to stop a performance due to a lack of ‘hearing’ is because they couldn’t be sure they were keeping up with the tape. If you’re actually singing and your feedback dies, you use the other ear.
Canadian reporters who were obliged to endure the purgatory of a recent concert in Niagara Falls reacted with what may be the single most accurate and acerbic review of a Simpson performance ever recorded, “It might be unfair calling Jessica Simpson’s show a train wreck – At some point, a train knows where it’s going.”
This latest charade is implacable proof of the spotless precision of that elegant summation.
There are performers in this country who could produce a more melodious sound if they were currently gargling with Pennzoil. But they can’t get a break. And the incessant and suffocating promotion of the risible dearth of perceptible talent exhibited by Ms. Simpson and her equally bogus contemporaries is a significant reason why.
America, you deserve so much better than this!
Watch for yourself [if you dare] and see if you can spot where the tape dies…
Correct me if I’m mis-reading the clues but this has all the hallmarks of yet another tiresome crusade to manipulate the public to gain free PR; You present the media with a ‘tragic’ scenario, then sit back in palm-buffing glee as they slavishly report your onanistic fallacy like it had the smallest scintilla of a chance to be fact. Then, once the resultant furor has peaked, you issue a second announcement, informing what you indulgently perceive as a panic-stricken world that this fearful circumstance – which was never real to begin with – has been miraculously averted, thanks to the selfless dedication of the same malfeasant half-wits who caused its creation.
Result? Two non-stories for the price of one, and long [profitable] lines at the Box Office.
And those who make movies are far from the only ones guilty of this insulting charade; Pick any performing medium and you’ll find the same brainless knavery; Self-inflicted drug ‘addiction’, Cows cut in half and embedded in plastic, two faded movie starlets kissing in public [in front of every camera they could possibly find,] declaring your candidacy against John McCain…three months before the election….The list is as endless as it is disrespectful.
As the audience, we deserve higher regard. Show us a performer imbued with genuine talent and we’ll make them a legend without further delay. It has been thus since the dawn of movies in those halcyon days of the roaring 20′s. But woe betide s/he who practices trickery – Despite the corrosive effects of the cranial oatmeal that forms the majority of American TV we still have an intellect, and we neither appreciate nor deserve its being abused or insulted for exploitative gain.
Quite how we can counter this sickening trend has yet to be clear, but we need to do something or it can only get worse [If that's possible.] Suggestions of ways to achieve our redress are hereby invited. Meantime, I’m off to rest in a darkened room with 10lbs of Hershey’s, while my brain recovers from this latest assault.
In an interview that appears today on Forbes.com, ten-time Emmy Award-winner Steven Bochco becomes the latest witness to Network greed. He’s decided to take his new drama series, “Raising the Bar,” to the cable station TNT, instead of to one of the Nets.
Mr Bocho accuses the Networks of devolving into purveyors of programming he has no interest in providing. In other words, “Reality” series. He also tells Forbes that the Nets are obsessed with micromanaging every detail of a production…which comes as no surprise at all.
From the man who was largely responsible for “Hill Street Blues,” “L.A. Law,” “NYPD Blue,” and a string of other top-rated shows that earned the very same networks millions in ad revenues, this is a damming indictment of the state of America’s broadcast media. The sad part, however, is: 1) How unarguably right his view is, and 2) The total absence of anyone in a similar position with the courage to agree, or even speak out at all.
I mean, when was the last time you watched a quality program on a broadcast network?
Let’s say it: American television is about money. First, last and only. Not shows, not quality, and certainly not the audience – Just the dollars. And as Mr. Bochco has proven, it shows. They make intellectual chewing gum for an audience they believe possess the IQ of wool, crush any spark of originality or creativity out of it with obsessive over-management, then infest it with commercials to make as much cash as possible.
…Then they wonder why people don’t watch??
The Summer hiatus is over and so are the Games. The ‘Fall’ season could be the Nets’ chance to repent and refocus their priorities. What do you think — Will they recant and finally show us – the audience – some respect, or will they just go on as before?
Leave a comment and let’s take a poll…
In what may be their dumbest, most dangerous and calculated attempt to boost their ratings to the dizzying heights of double figures, MTV is now casting a new “Reality” show where impressionable teens will be required to suffer borderline-anorexia in order to win fame on the Runway.
“MTV is looking for girls willing to shed 30-80 lbs to become a model and win $100,000!” says the brazen announcement for ‘Model Maker’ on MTV’s site.
There’s no other word for it: This is sick.
Driven by the incessant and powerful influences exerted on them by the media this show’s target audience of teenage and young-adult girls are already susceptible to the slightest negative perception of their appearance or value. And now a network, whose content and performers could be justifiably cited as a prominent source of this withering propaganda [Try and name one plus-sized Singer or Model?] plan to selfishly exploit this terrorizing insecurity and need for validation to boost ratings and their own bottom line.
The show’s still in casting and may not debut for months [or, please God, ever!] but the mental imagery is already worrying; I see long lines of young girls and their Mothers standing patiently in line outside MTV’s offices, keen to let the station exploit their young darling’s paralyzing fears about her own value and worth…which MTV helped create in the first place.
If anyone has suggestions as how we might change MTV’s [excuse me while I use an irrelevant term] ‘mind’ about this, I’d be happy to hear them. Meantime, I’m off for a sandwich…
